Illustrator CS files with large linked files results in large file size

If I place a large linked Photoshop 7 file (.psd or.eps), say 36 MB, in Illustrator CS and save without embedding the file it takes ages to save and I end up with a 24MB file instead of about 500 K as it would have been in Illustrator 10. Its like it's embedding the file anyway even though I have not requested it to.

Is this a bug? This was a problem with an earlier version of Illustrator until a patch was released. Is there a solution?

Mac OSX 10.2.8 on G4 dual 1Ghz with1.5GB RAM

It is embedding the file... but only for PDF compatibility. Your choice is to live with the size if you need PDF compatibility or deselect that option when you save the file. If you choose the latter, the file will be as slim as you were accustomed to in version 10.

I have tied saving my CS document with a link (not embedded) .psd file while deselecting the PDF compatibility as Doug told but it continues with exactly the same problems. I sincerely hope it is another Illustrator bug because for me it is impossible to use this version with these huge files and long saving times. I bought the CS Standard package recently and Photoshop and Indesign are fine but Illustrator CS and its bugs make me continue working with version 10 until a CS 11.1 comes.

I am working with Mac OSX 10.3.3 on a G5 dual 2Gh with 1.5Gb Ram. and saving files is still slow.
