Illustrator CS freezes when resizing objects

Hi,
wonder if anyone can help? I recently installed Creative Suite for Windows on my Dell laptop (2.4ghz P4, 1gb RAM). Illustrator 10 used to work perfectly on this system and this issue occurs even with no other applications running.
The problem is that when I resize any object, the whole systems locks up for a few seconds, and when it comes back to life, it resizes to whereever the cursor is at that time.
As you can imagine, it make is pretty much impossible to resize anything accurately.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,
Have you tried changing the Display Performance in your Preferences? I remember this was refreshing rather slowly at first for me, which is not you problem specifically, but I have had a very similar problem with the reflect tool. In Illustrator 10, you can Alt-click on the point you want to use as the axis for reflecting. When I try that in AI CS, it locks up for at least a minute before the dialog box even appears, then for a while longer before the object appears. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to where the reflected object will appear - last time I tried it, the reflected object appeared outside the page margin. I wonder if the manual says anything about how to do this - I have CS on a license and nobody in my company seems to be able to locate the original manual. I should probably post this as a separate issue.

Thanks for the reply Andrea. Sounds like a similar issue but I had no luck with adjusting the display performance I'm afraid.
The problem went away for a while and now it came back :|
It even occurs with very simple artwork such as a blank canvas with a filled rectangle and nothing else...
Anyone else any experience of this problem?

What is your operating system? When you get a freeze, what is your current resource availability? Do you regularly Defrag your working (C:) and ScratchDisk Drive if it's not C:? How many fonts do you have installed and active? This sounds like a system balk. Also check out <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2a39a.htm>.
