Good morning or good evening depending upon your location. I want to ask you the most important question of your life. Your joy or sorrow for all eternity depends upon your answer. The question is: Are you saved? It is not a question of how good you

No, Linda does NOT work for Adobe.
Are you a shill for Quark?
If I follow your logic, you must be. Otherwise, these type of questions are a little uncalled for.

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
I take it some of these comments have been made with tounge firmly in cheek, to say that Illustrator CS is the work of genius, and to say that you have never had it crash - incredible!!? unless I have the only duff copy!?

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
I don't know about the duffness of your copy, but I don't know how you can say AI CS (or any version, for that matter) is NOT a work of genius. And I use CS on two different G4s, one at work, one at home, and while I can't say it never crashes, I can say it rarely does, and only then if I'm pushing it in an unusually demanding fashion - like combining several Efffects on the same complex set of objects.

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
Hi Gary,
Since moving over to Illustrator CS our departments swear box is overspilling, and I honestly thought this forum was a wind up!
The new text engine is a farce and just on the basis of this I find the whole package unusable, maybe it does have some nice features, but I'm too busy solving problems to find them.
work of genius? I dont think so.

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
steve perhaps it is you? Yes it has a problem or two but only if you make them problems but you have to choose to do so. You have chosen to do so.
The new text engine is not a farce and will add new dimensions to AI in the future
Paragraph and Character Styles will be a feature that you Steve Gee will be coming to the forum to tell everyone…"hey why don't you just create a character or paragraph style and save yourself the trouble!"
Oh yes you will. Yo have a client tell you to take an older version of a ten or fifteen piece campaign al done in AI CS and tell Ok this time we've to update some text and want you change the art keep the format and update this text but we would like the text style to change to reflect that change so pick different fonts and a looser look etc.
And of course we need it yesterday. With AI CS you can do that in a few minutes not in previous versions. You can then even write a script or action and the next time puff! Done!
You just don't understand the power of it.
And yes I know the legacy files it's about time they were update for the love of a deadline!

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
please, do you really need to be so patronising to Mr Gee?
There are a lot of amazing technological things in our world that we will all be using...one day...but until they have perfected Personal Jet Packs to enable me to fly to work and back I wont be investing in one, the technology just isnt ready yet.
You see, it should be the same with programs like Illustrator. I really am impressed with the theory of the new text engine and believe it is something that has been on regular users wish-lists for some time but it doesnt seem as though it is ready to be used in a professional environment yet, and like Personal Jet Packs, has not been fully tested for safety, so I personally will be waiting until all the 'creases' have been ironed out.
I, along with most other creative professionals, want to welcome this technology with open arms but if it is likely to fail when it matters most that IS a problem. Nobody is choosing to make that a problem, it is just the size of the problem that varies depending on your reasons for using Illustrator...

Was I, I wasn't trying to be as I don't own a Personal Jet Pack! 8) But I would like to!
I agree it depends on how you sue the application. And yes there are problems?

Re: Illustrator CS - Good One!!!
With regard to adopey, I agree entirely, I have recently sat in on an In-Design seminar/introductory session (nb. I do not use quark xpress or In-Design as I work solely in Illustrator and Photoshop) and was blown away by the text in In-Design, the overall feel of the package is superb, and if there was any way I could do my kind of work in this software I would.
I understand that the 'vision' is that one day all Adobe CS packages will use the same engines and appear seamless, I am hoping that that means one day I will be able to open Illustrator and use the same 'quality' text options as In-Design has now. Either that or In Design will come along to such a degree that I can create packaging artwork in it (it is almost there i think, but would like to see a keyline preview on it so that I can work accuratly with the cutter guides.)
As it stands at the moment the text in AICS is so poor that I really do find it barely useable. AICS is probably fine if your using it purely to create logos or illustrations to place into page makeup software. But with heavy use of text it falls over completely, the fact that scaling objects with text can cause the text to reflow is diabolical. I wont even go into the legacy issue.
Untill the day that everybody has moved over to AICS, including all agencies that send us files to work with and the many reprographic companies that we deal with all around the world, I will be sticking mainly to AI8 in classic.
Believe it or not I'm all for progress, but I wish that the basics of the software could be sorted out before all the whistles and bells are added. Adobe should be ashamed of this release especially if they expect people to work with it alongside the fantastic Photoshop CS and the impressive looking In-Design.
