Illustrator CS icons change randomly on Windows XP Pro

For no reason at all Illustrator CS icons change randomly on Windows XP Pro to other icons that are unrelated to Illustrator.

I have sent in a bug report.

Anyone else have this annoying problem?

Whatever the issue is it is probably more of a system problem and not necessarily something that Adobe has any control over.

That is always a possibility except that Illustrator CS is the only application (the only one) on my system expressing this problem. I have the Adobe Creative Suite Premium too. Looks like an Adobe Illustrator specific problem to me.

Yes. Something is wrong with your system that is only effecting Illustrator.

This is often the case with Windows if you have a plethora of Shortcuts and programs on your system (like more than thirty, etc., althoughj I'm guessing at that number). There is a tweak that's supposed to help that, but I can't remember what it is now. Check Microsoft's knowledgebase.

I have the same problem. It has something to do with the fact that Explorer shows different icons for different versions of Illustrator files (aics, ai10, ai9, etc) Sometimes Explorer shows a general icon and then changes it to an icon of illustrator of some version.
I also have the following problem:
when an Illustrator file is in the recycle bin, windows takes some time to show the proper icon, and then I am unable to delete the file permanently from the recycle bin until I restart windows and purge all files from the recycle bin without looking at them.

I have the identical problem you describe Paul. There it is.

Interesting problem. I know it is just cosmetic, however, correct icons are great guides.

It is not much to fix. I just save over the old file to get the correct icons back.

Things could be worse. LOL

I also have the changing icon problem in Illustrator CS, except that on my XP machine, Illustrator crashes too. Any advice? Again, Illustrator is the only program to do this.

I use Norton Antivirus, but I have auto-protect and script blocking disabled. Only email scanning is enabled.
I also use other Norton utilities, but I run them only when I need to.

Although Norton Utilities and Anti-virus seems to effect many systems with Adobe products (especially Illustrator), and this "could" be one such example, it's also a known item in Windows XP when you have many programs installed and Windows gets stalled in picking up all the icons from all programs. There is a cure, but I don't recall what it is. Check the MS knowledgebase (icons) and see what you might find there.

Might be full or corrupt ShellIconCache, it's pretty easy to find a reg fix
by Google.
You can also try changing the size of the icons in Display > Appearances,
then changing back to see if the cache gets rebuilt

had the exact same problem - weird icons for my .ai files. i'm running AI CS, XP Home & Norton.

Rick's fix above (change icon size in Control Panel/Display/Appearance/Effects, then change back) worked for me.

I know many have said this is not an Illustrator problem. I don't believe it because Illustrator CS is the ONLY application on my system with this problem. I believe the Illustrator code needs fixing.

I will try Rick's fix:

I have the same situation with CorelDraw, which for some reason wishes to associate some CDR files with Corel 3 (which I still have installed) and some with Corel 11 (also installed). It's a system thing. And for those who ask, yes there are "some" problems running Corel 3 in XP, but it'll run enough to open the old files in Compatibility mode. From there I can Copy/Paste to Corel 11 and then into Illustrator.
