Illustrator CS Quits at Random!?!? Had to Downgrade!!!

Illustrator quit after dragging a low res bitmap file from one document to another. I had been previously dragging vector files back and forth.

LRK: What I can tell from the crashlog...

The crashlog indicates that you were in the midst of closing a window rather than dragging bitmaps from one document to another. It was processing a down mouse-click in a close box.

Are you absolutely certain that this crash happened whilst you were dragging bitmaps between documents...or did it happen a little bit afterwards when you were closing a window?

Realize that I'm not calling you a liar...the crash may be a rather unusual circumstance of some sort where the OS gets it's "wires crossed". Perhaps you did not click on the close box, but something in the OS simulated such a thing? Or perhaps you did click on the close box.

Adam: It's possible I closed a window prior to or after dragging. I had several documents open and was closing windows after dragging. I was moving pretty fast so it's hard to know for sure.

I'll add that we're trying to reproduce this bugs but have not been able to yet. Once we can reproduce one, it's as good as gone...and we probably can say much more about what the issue is and how to avoid it.

But, i've had no luck this morning dragging bitmaps between documents followed by closing windows. I've even sprinkled some effects in for good measure.

I just had another crash. This time nothing showed up in my log report. It reads:

That's it. Every time I crash I keep the report to post and then delete the one in my log folder.

This time it happened after I had been tracing a low res bitmap, had rearranged some layers, then just as I used the Zoom Tool it quit.

This one took place when I attempted to reopen a file I had just closed.

Seen that crashlog a few times in this thread, reported by a few people.

It's drawing a tool in the tool palette.

How that could crash...how it could be related to anything is a mystery to me. The tool palette draws all of it's tools regardless of whether a document is up or not.

Unfortunately, the last few entries are in "AGM", the module that draws things, and I get very little information from the numbers.

Can you tell me a little bit about the video mode you are using? Resolution and color depth?

Hi,

This Illustrator CS crash happoens to me every single time:

I press command+s to save the .ai document I'm working, (the ai doc. has 11 mgs, with placed tif images and a bit of text).

After that, the save window with the progress bar pops up, I switch to Photoshop CS (that was already open in the background) while illustrator is saving the doc...

2/3 seconds latter Illustrator CS crashes.

This happens every-time I do this action.

pedro: Is switching to Photoshop a necessary step to reproduce that crash? Put another way...if you wait until the file saves before switching out of Illustrator, does it crash too?

LRK: I can't think of anything else to ask at this time, but will continue to ponder possibilities. It's not like we don't test the cr&p out of it. I believe is it something specific to your configuration, but I cannot imagine what. I'm not really a subscriber to the "unstable" computer theory, so I won't ask you to reformat your drive or reinstall the operating system. Yet.

Well, I was trying to reproduce the same crash, and now I can't. It does not crash when switching to photoshop, while saving and after saving.

But because this crash happen to me several times before, I tend to not switch to photoshop cs when Illustrator is saving, so I thought it happened every-time.
But it looks like it happens at random to!?

I even made a log off to start fresh. 1-Open illustrator and file, and then photoshop, saved the file/switch to phot... and everything looks normal now...until the next crash. :-)

It just occured to me that I had quite a few applications opened. Not sure if this is always the case but I wouldn't be surprised if I was just using too much memory.

Here's another report:

I decided to run the fsck -fy script. It repaired Volume Header.

After rebooting I launched Illustrator and my internet browsers only. I opened a file in Illustrator, made a few changes, then closed it. I then used the Web browser. I then clicked back on the Illustrator Icon in my Dock and the program crashed again.

It's taken me some time to figure out what those six sets of numbers are, but i've found the exact reason for the crash and am now talking with Dave about what i've found. It's not particularly enlightening.

Something unexpected has happened. A "PixMap" without a corresponding color table has been encountered. That is not supposed to happen. At least, I cannot imagine why that would happen.

It may be an odd, but expected situation. It may be a bug in the Operating system or video driver. It may be another problem.

I'll get back to you when I have more information. For now, I cannot say much other than play with your video modes or video driver.

I thought this was going to be an interesting diversion from my day-to-day work. Ouch.

Adam: Sorry about the interesting diversion. :) I do appreciate you looking into this.

By way of reminder... I never have a problem with Photoshop CS crashing, nor with other applications (for the most part), other than Illustrator CS & GoLive CS. My system seems more stable than it's ever been, well since maybe OS 8.6.1.

I trust there will be a solution other than hardware (hopefully). Thanks very much!

The video cards that were used on the G4s perhaps?

I haven't had any crashes from either Illustrator CS, or GoLive CS, on a G5 2 Ghz Dual -- which uses a different card.
