Default Illustrator CS save as PDF questions

I found this thread in the search, ( JasonSmith "This new PDF size thing is really not working out" 2/27/04 6:06am </cgi-bin/webx?13@@.2cd04bb4/14> )
but it was kinda long and got OT and my question is simple, no gripping or anything here...

so basically, if i use Illustrator CS's save as pdf function, the resulting PDF will include EVERYTHING on the artboard and make one giant PDF versus like before it would crop out stuff that's not on the document size? and the only way is to set crop marks?

Also, is there a way to expand crop marks so that they become like the old crop marks --as if it's manually drawn -- selectable and deletable?

Yes, set crop marks or whatever hangs over the artboard will be included.

As for the second question, not sure what you mean. If you draw a rectangle anywhere on the artboard, keep it selected, then choose Object>Crop Area>Make, AI will use the rectangle to make crop marks. If you choose Object>Crop Area>Release, AI will remove the crop marks and return your rectangle (without fill or stroke). If you choose Object>Crop Area>Make with no object selected, crop marks will be set to the edges of the artboard.

And that thread you found, while long, is not in the slightest OT!

Hi Doug, well, okay you got me. i read it for like 10 seconds and gave up. haha

As for the second question. Say want a set of crop marks that's 3x4. but if i use AI's Crop Area > Make, it'll make the resulting PDf file 3x4 in size. But what i really want is to have a page that's 8.5x11 SHOWING the crop marks at 3x4. In the old old AI Ilike 8 i think) when you make crop marks, it basically drew lines where the rectangular area was and didn't actually do any croping... is there anyway to do that still?

Nope - And you couldn't do it in AI8, either.

Make your artboard 3x4. Save As PDF. In the Marks & Bleed panel, select Trim marks and set your left and right bleed to 2.75. Set your top and bottom bleed to 3.5. This should give you an 8.5 x 11 "page" with visible crop marks that are centered and set to 3x4.

Sorry. Wrong. Can't make your bleed sizes larger than 1". But the idea's right. You're just limited to crop marks no more than 1" inside your total PDF "area."

Yes, hmm - this is certainly a LOT freekin easier than simply saving the PDF at a certain size - and having the PDF REMAIN at that size.

Actually in my case - in the aforementioned thread - my final PDF was smaller than the AI crops.
