Illustrator CS systematic crash
Hi,
I recently installed Illustrator CS on my Mac and the application crashed every single time at startup. After spending quite a while on the problem, I discovered what was wrong:
My user folder is relocated to a second drive (through the Net Info Manager and backed-up by a symlink). Most of my third party applications reside in ~/Applications.
If the 3D extension is active and the application is in ~/Applications, then Illustrator crashes. If the 3D extension is disabled, then the application launches fine. If the application is moved to /Applications instead, I can use Illustrator with the 3D extension.
Distiller had similar issues. It'd be nice if these nasty bugs could be fixed....

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
I don't think that is a bug but kind of a strange relationship of software you have and since you have a fix I would for one would say it was fixed. Congratulations.
Why is it necessary to move your User folder to another drive?

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
I just installed Illu.CS upgrade and have Crashed on every attempt to open the program. when the splash screen reades font menu 30% it crashes I used fontbook to disable all the font but this has not helped. I'm working on a job now so I'll keep using Ill 9. When I have more time I'll call Adobe unless someone has an answer. thanks Ron

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Well, since this setup is supported by Apple, I consider this a bug.
For development and testing purposes, I frequently have to erase my boot volume and restore a clean system (ASR images). I can only easily manage that by having my user folder on a separate partition. It also allows me to boot from various volumes while keeping the same user folder. I know a bunch of other people having the same setup more because of limited amount of space available on their main drive. Instead of replacing the original drive, they simply added a drive and relocated the user folder.
It is true that I have a workaround, but that's hardly a fix since I really wanted to install a minimum number of applications on the boot volume.

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Hi Ron, and does the application still crash if you disable the 3D extension by moving it out of the plug-in folders ???

I tried removing the 3D plug in, It still would not start. I also repaired permissions. I have got it to open on a different users desktop?

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
It could be a preferences issue. I would trash some of the Illustrator preferences in the user account where the application crashes :-\

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Oh for the love of might you guys must know by now that OS X does not like corrupt fonts, corrupt files, preferences etc. that there is an update to Spell Catcher etc. and that there are many solutions already listed…did any of you do a search you probably would have found your solution a long time ago.

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Thanks Wade. As far as the original question in this thread goes nevertheless, I did perform a search both in this forum and in others and didn't find any relevant answer. Illustrator CS doesn't crash because of a corruption or a bad interaction with a third party application, it does because it is not fully Net Info Manager compliant (as isn't Distiller 6.0.1).

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
well having the user folder on another drive is not the problem with my installation...
no matter what the "corrupt file, reinstall from master disks" error shows up in this copy of cs 11.0.6 and the program will no longer startup.
any other hints?
already deleted the prefs, the registration database file, tried removing the 3d extension. reinstalled multiple times after complete deletion of all things illustrator.
this after cs worked for 1 day.....

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Yeah, I finally found out that it was more than that. The depth at which the application is installed seems to make a difference. I moved the app up a few folders and it fixed it.

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
I have been usings AICS for a two months now and just recently started crashing a start-up. I have flollowed some of the solutions. Disabled the 3D plug-in, moved the folder to a different location, moved the folder from the Applications folder, but I have not re-installed the software. Should that be my next step. If you have any solutions to this problem please respond. OS 10.3.3 PANTHER. THANK YOU

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
Ivan where in havens name did you get those solutions. I think you misread them those amy have been things people thought they should try but I have yet to ever hear of those as solutions.
I am afraid you are picking and choosing what you might want to be a solution rather than following the wisest course of action. Try doing a search here and see if you can get yourself to actually follow those remedies that actually solve this problem.

Re: Illustrator CS systematic crash
The Illustrator preferences are I think in user/library/preferences/adobeillustrator/
Repairing permissions is done in Disk First Aid. Go to Your Appications folder>Utilities and double click Disk Utility. Select the First Aid tab, choose your main drive then select "Repair Disk Permissions" and let it run it's course. You really should do that after all updates and installs.

Perhaps there could be a Permanent post that lists some troubleshooting tips for those that don't frequent the forums. Seems that enough people are having issues to warrant this, nest' pas??
