Mac OSX is not like Mac OS9. There is no memory box. RAM is assigned dynamically in OSX.

Yeah but somewhere along the lines the RAM has caused yoru caps lock key to stick!
Illustrator won't use all the RAM. It'll use waht it needs. If it does somethign and needs a little more, OSX will give it to it. Don't assume that Illustrator is using the entire 1GB though. If you've got an OS installed, that needs RAM. If you're running a web browser, that needs RAM.
