Re: Illustrator in Freehand
In Illustrator CS save it as an Illustrator 8 ".ai" file (not
Illustrator 8 EPS). Then open in FH.

Re: Illustrator in Freehand
You can try saving in an older format to see if that has better luck: Illustrator 7 or 5.5. What you describe sounds more like what I get when I import a PDF into Freehand.

Re: Illustrator in Freehand
Illustrator CS doesn't 'save' down anymore, but you can export (like
Freehand) as 'Illustrator Legacy'. The only options it gives you though,
are versions 10, 9, 8 and 3. The problem ah_oi is having is caused by
the fact that Illustrator CS has a completely new type engine, with all
those nice OpenType features from InDesign. When you save down to any
legacy version, it puts every single character in its own container.
You'll get the same results even if you export to and open in AI10. It's
all explained here:

I don't think there's any way of getting a AICS file into Freehand (or
any older versions of AI for that matter) with fully editable text.

at our place in the near future. Can an older version of Illustrator
open the file in a nicely text editable form? Maybe we should hang on to
the older version of Illustrator as well if that could solve it.

number of the 'fragmented' blocks of text (it's usually a PDF or a
QuarkXPress EPSF I'm dealing with) with a selection tool, Copy (or Cut),
then click with the text tool in an empty area and Paste. The pieces
will be reunited in a single item, usually in the correct order --
although some word-spaces may be skipped over, needing manual
replacement. It would be tedious doing this for a very large quantity of
text, but I've had reasonable success reconstructing a paragraph or two
in this manner.
