Illustrator shuts down abruptly

Periodically Illustrator 10 will shut down completely and abruptly - no dialogue box, no chance to save. I hit Ctrl or Shift and some other key I can't pin down and POOF it's gone. It always starts happening when I have been working for a while but once it happens it will recur in the same day even if I keep restarting. I once spent an hour the morning after a particularly frustrating episode trying to MAKE it happen with no success. I'm running Windows XP with plenty of RAM.

I've seen that happen with version 8, 9, and 10. I haven't experienced it with cs yet.

I don't think anyone has ever pinned it down. The only thing I can say, is save often.
