Illustrator won't open the SVG file I just saved

Illustrator CS 11.0.0 under Windows 2000

Yesterday, worked on an AI file tweaking design, etc. Made slices so it can be brought into GoLive. Saved the file as .SVG

Today I want to work on it some more. I try to open the file and get nothing. No window opens. No error. Just nothing.

What am I not getting? Was I supposed to save the AI file AND save an SVG version of the same file?

If I double click on that file to open it in Explorer, I get a message at the bottom:

mismatched tag: line 8246, column 9

Julie,

You should ALWAYS save your master file as .ai. Other formats do not support
all the things that .ai does.

I usually do - it was an oversite yesterday.

However, I don't understand why Illustrator won't open an SVG file that it made.... is it not supposed to?

Can't say much about that - SVG support is so bad on the web, and the plugin
is such a huge download for users, that I wouldn't consider using SVG
despite its many inherent advantages as a web format. I want all my web
users to have accessibility, not merely a very small proportion of them.

From the error, it sounds as though the file is not correctly written. SVG
must conform to XML standards, which requires closing tags for everything.
Whether this is due to file corruption or a program bug, I have no idea.

I notice in your other post you are talking about HTML e-mail.
I hope that you are aware that SVG's aren't going to work within an e-mail
client at all.
