Illustrator10 Imports PSD files at Random%'s...Looks fine..
HI, I have recently switched form Illustrator 8 to 10, and also upgraded to system 10(I am also on a G4). When I place a psd file in Illustrator 10, this psd file will place proportionately to the dimensional size that it is in Photoshop, I will check the file info from the Links options and notice that Illustrator 10 places the file at a random percentage(which by the way was an accident, the file looks on screen to be perfect), trying then making it then to be 100%(which is how i need the art) will make the placed file larger(in inches) then it really is. So i tested saving these file out as Illustrator 8, and switched back to my old system and opened the file which then reads that random percentage and places the file to that percentage(that i did not indicate) smaller then what it need to be. Help!

The Links palette is showing you the percent size of the image as it would be at 72 ppi. It is correct. A 300 ppi placed image will show in the Links palette as 24%. To find the size you are looking for, divide 72 by the size percentage you dind in the Links palette (72/.24 = 300). Or, open up the Document Info palette and look at Linked Images.

Re: Illustrator10 Imports PSD files at Random%'s...Looks fine..
Thank you for the response, however is there anyway to change this feature so that my art even at 300 dpi will read as the correct percentage. Also the art that is saved out of Illustrator 10 and into 8, when I check this art in Illustrator 8, the art places in at that 72dpi percenatge, I feel this is a problem for those vendors still not accepting Illustrator 10. Also this is confusing fro those of us who would scrub files and check art through the links palette. Help, Thanks

Re: Illustrator10 Imports PSD files at Random%'s...Looks fine..
It is terribly frustrating for me. When I wnt to import an image and scale it to the same percentage as an image already imported I have to grap my calculator. No other program anywhere makes this so dificult. Kind of like printing with crop marks. There's the easy way everyone else does it, or the hard way only Illustrator does.

I guess I don't know what you want. Can you post a step by step description of what you are doing, and what you would expect to happen, and what actually does hapen? Seems to me all the information you need is in the Document Info palette.

I'm sorry, as Scott said it was hard to scale an immage. I do
not find it hard. Maybe I will with OSX.
I select the image in AI, copy and paste it to a new doc. export it as a .tiff into Photoshop. Make my changes and then go back to the AI doc, select the picture I want to replace, go to the fly out menue and replace the file with the one I want. It does not change sizes.
If it does resize, what is the big deal? Resize it to the one you're comparing it to.

Re: Illustrator10 Imports PSD files at Random%'s...Looks fine..
OK....
Step 1-I have an Illustrator Document Page, I am importing a 300 dpi PSD file to be placed at the exact size that it reads in Photoshop which is 6" x 12".
Step 2 -So I place, and now I go to the Document info and Illustrator tells me that this is placed at 24%, (this being what it would be if the file was 72 dpi, great for web not for print)
Step 3- would be checking to make sure that this file can be sent to a printer and that the file reads at 100 % placed, to avoid distortions, this adaptation is a problem because one may be confused as to the correct size the file should print at...
So, ok taking into consideration what was mentioned earlier with these comments, I am now going to assume that Ill 10 just does not read a 300 dpi psd Image as is, and or they must be saved out as an eps from photoshop.
What do you think? Should I just deal. Oh and by the by Illustrator 8 did not have this read problem, so I guess thats whats throwing me off. Thanks for the time....DD

Re: Illustrator10 Imports PSD files at Random%'s...Looks fine..
AICS doesn't have the "read problem" either. But AI10's only read problem is in the "reporting." What you see (rather than what you read) is what you get: if you've placed a 6" x 12" 300 ppi file, and you don't scale it, it'll print 6" x 12" at 300 ppi.
