I'm SHRINKING!!...not quite

I have a photo heavy newsletter created in Illustrator CS1 that I need to make into a small pdf file.

What's the best way to shrink the file size down while still maintaining decent quality?

What file size should I consider small enough to email? Right now I've got 4 pages at 4.6MB.

Yes. Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

I can't get it smaller than 4MB.

I actually took a screen capture of each page and put them all in one pdf which got it down to under 1MB, but there's got to be a better way to do it than that.

Have you tired Advanced>PDF Optimizer from the Acrobat menu?

Well - there are settings which can re-sample images and also apply more
aggressive compression, unembed fonts and re-compress document structure
etc.

However, if Acrobat still cannot being the file size down, there are 3rd
party applications which can reduce sizes even more:
