Image Previewing

I'm a Photoshop newbie. Most of what I will be using it for is Web graphics. When creating a new image, is there a way to preview the image before saving it?

Also, where do I go to change the image from a jpg to gif or vice-versa.

Create your image, then Jump To Image Ready (it's at the bottom of the toolbar).

Image Ready is geared for Web graphics and installs with Photoshop. There you can play.

Use the help file (F1). You can search for things you want to know and it's pretty comprehensive.

Image Ready will have your preview-like window (Optimized).

To change file types, you simply Save As and pick the file type. If you use Save For Web, you'll be better off.

Actually, you don't have to jump to ImageReady to save a layered PSD file as a .gif, .jpg, or .png. In Photoshop, Just do File->Save For Web. It will bring up a preview panel that will let you see how your image will look at different .jpg quality/compression settings, or as different types of .gif files (from 256 colors down to just a few). Personally, I use ImageReady mainly for animations.
