to open them in Fireworks (my pc at home uses XP) at home, it says
"unkown file type, could not open file." Help!

Mac and PC use different formats to store their data in. You need to
download an hybrid PC/MAC image viewer such as IrFanView and resave the
file. Download the viewer [ http://www.irfanview.com ] and install it on
your PC. Load the MAC file into the viewer and resave the document.

It happens sometimes, especially when email programs ain't configured
properly :-) In this case, you sometimes receive Mac-generated file as
"something" without useful extension, plus a copy of Mac's resource fork.
Try renaming the files to appropriate extension in Windows. The ones that
are images will open. The ones that are resource forks will not (they are
useless to Windows anyway).

For what it's worth, I never have a problem viewing images created on either
my Mac or my PC on either platform. It's not necessary to get any kind of
separate viewer.

I believe Ilya is on target with the email comment, however.

A GIF is a GIF is a GIF.

Are you sure you have the .gif extension on it? Windows needs that. And it's
a good habit to get into anyways if you ever plan on migrating to OSX.

Yes and sometimes they won't open AT ALL but dropping the icon in the
veiwer app WILL open them. It depends on the viewer software used and
the type of file and its properties and also sometimes if the file has
been altered in any way by the Mac (such as you described here below).
Death to Mac for all I care.. :-)

Thanks Darrel, i'll remember that. I thought Mac and PC files were
unexchangable no matter what the format was. Guess I was wrong.

Normally, I don't have any problems with Mac/PC email exchange either. My
closest collegue works on Mac, and we never have problems exchanging files.
But I know at least one person working on Mac, who somehow manage to
*always* send files that arrive with dummy .DAT extension, or no extension
at all. I have no control over his Mac and mail server, so all I can do is
try to recognize file format and manualy assign the file extension to it.
And I always keep getting copies of resource forks from him (as .DAT files
as well). But in the end, saving attachments and manually reassigning
extensions always work.
