I'm having the same problem and have been going crazy trying to figure out what to do.
I am using a 1.5ghz powerbook g4 with osx 10.3.9. I bought Creative Suites Premium and can't afford to update at this time. I was using indesign CS on a few books for my church this winter and had no problems. Recently my hard drive crashed and I installed a seagate 100 gig. I installed the os from the original cd's and it was ver 10.3. something and I downloaded the all in one update to 10.3.9. I had tried carbon copy cloning the software back to the new hard drive and had some problems so quickly trashed that and reinstalled from scratch. I think I may have installed an update for indesign cs1 that said something about compabality with cs2 (no i didn't read all the fine print figuring I needed it).
I can't open any .indd file without the program loading and then getting the "import failed" message. Not even the files for the books I had worked on a couple of months ago.
I obvviously don't use this program every day but having been in printing from high school in 1978 and bs printing mgnt in 1982, etc, I try to stay in it and find this program helpful in my photo business and occasional typesetting job. So anyway, I've tried trashing the indesign folder and secure emptying the trash and reinstalling indesign cs (not the whole suite since I have no problem with photoshop or go live, etc.) I called the adobe help line to no avail only to be tried to be sold a help package for 39 dollars or something like that. It seems to me that saving even the simplest file you ought to be able to open it. This is very frustrating. Pardon my ignorance here but what in the heck am I doing wrong?

Reinstalling software without trashing preferences will leave you in the same place as before you reinstalled. Trashing prefs is much simpler and faster than reinstalling.

Also do you have this problem in a new user?

have you done any maintenance on your computers?

    Thanks for the reply "Buko".
I have tried trashing the indesign preferences, and then after your suggestion I also tried as a new user and still had the problem.
The maintenence I have done recently in addition to installing a new hard drive about a month ago is a day or so ago I tried disk maintenence and checked/repaired disk permissions.
Now that I trashed the preferences I got the message about the compatability for cs2 update being available and I did not download this update this time.
Thanks again for your help. I'm still trying to figure this problem out and appreciate any input.
