Default Imported Bitmap Edges

I have imported a two color bitmap image (b&w) into Fireworks. The image is a black shape on a white background with a lot of round egdes. These edges are very jagged and ugly. I have tried anti-alias and feathering under the fill options and there was absolutely no change.

How do I smooth out these egdes?

Thanks
Pat

I searched the forums for an answer as well, and although I did not find one, I did notice that the user is usually asked to post the file in question. So here is mine. I am redesigning my logo. I created it in AutoCAD and export as a bitmap.

You'd be better off redrawing it with the FW vector tools, because it is
kind of irrecgular and needs cleaning up anyway. But I found that using the
magic wand tool with a feather of 1 and deleting the white part worked ok.

If there is any way that you can bring the image into Fireworks as a vector
format, you're life is going to be a lot easier.

If you have got the rest of the studio, try this:

1) From Autocad, export the Logo as a Windows Metafile (WMF).
2) Import it into Flash, then export it out as an Adobe Illustrator file (I
chose version 6 format and it seems to work fine).
3) Then bring the AI file into Fireworks to size, anti-alias, etc.

If you don't have Flash, you can check if there is a vector format convertor
out there or just send me the file (WMF format) off-line and I will convert
it for you.

Cheers,
Sam

Ok, now it seems to be clear. You exported b\w bitmap with sceen resolution.
It *will* look jagged, of course. However, there are better ways to do the
job:

1) Get it into FW in vector form. This is preferrable way. Try copy\paste,
import\export, anything that may preserve vectors (sorry, I'm not much
familiar with ACAD so I don't know what export formats it provides that may
be readable by FW. Just try; once you've got anything but "bitmap" in FW
(i.e., once you've got any sort of vector drawing), you win).

2) Export it from ACAD as either antialiaised greyscale bitmap, or
oversampled b\w bitmap (say, with 600 ppi resolution). In the latter case,
you may apply "Blur" to it then scale it down to desired size. This way is
not as good as the way 1 because the resulting image is not as much
editable. It will look good, however.

3) If the way 1 fails and you still need editable vector copy, try to export
to oversampled bitmap as described for the route 2, then trace it to
vectors. If you have Freehand or Flash, use their trace facilities (I
personally would prefer Freehand). If you don't have any of them, try using
some free tracing utility like that from http://autotrace.sourceforge.net
(however, I'd STILL MUCH PREFER Freehand <g>) to convert the logo into
vectors.

If you are using a current version of AutoCad LT, supported vector formats
for export are:

DWF - Drawing Web Format
DXF - Drawing Exchange Format
WMF - Windows Metafile Format

If you are use a current version of the full AutoCad product, supported
vector formats for export are:
DWF - Drawing Web Format
DXF - Drawing Exchange Format
SAT - ACIS
3DS - 3D Studio MAX Format
WMF - Windows Metafile Format
EPS - PostScript
STL - Stereolithograph Format

> Thank you all for your replies. I had never understood what a vector
graphic is until now. I would have to think that Autocad has a way to
export that since all that program does is create a bunch of lines and
circles! What all file extensions are vector graphics?

Glad it worked out for you.

You can either mult-select them and make the change or you can Group them
(Modify>Group) if they should always be treated as a single entity.

the three vectors?
