Importing difficulties
On page 69 of the macromedia fireworks mx training from the source book that I am working with says I can import FreeHand 7, 8, 9, and 10 files as well as a bunch of others. So far the only file format that I have been able to get to import into a Fireworks files is an Illustrator 7 file. I am on a Mac running OS X. I haven't even been able to copy something in FreeHand mx and paste it into a Fireworks mx file.

Did you install Fireworks MX first and then FreeHand MX or did you do it in reverse order? FreeHand MX adds some functionality to Fireworks MX that permits it to open FreeHand MX files. If you didn't install FreeHand MX after Fireworks MX, not to worry! Just open the FreeHand MX application folder and then locate the FH_FW_Reader_Installer and run it. If you have Flash MX, while you're at it, run the FH_FL_Reader_Installer.
The FH_FW_Reader_Installer will add the components to Fireworks that will enable it to read (i.e. open and import) FreeHand MX files.
The Paste issue is another thing. See the following TechNote for info on that:

We are painfully aware of this bug and I logged it as such so that we'll try to have this fixed in the next release.
