Default Importing Excel data

On each import FM 5.5 crashes on the last record to import!
e.g. dummy.xls contains of 21 records -
FM crashes on the last ( 21st ) or takes very long time.

Is there a reason for that ?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
I work with Excel files everyday and its been years since I've seen one
corrupted. That doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally happen. Have you
tried any other Excel files with the same results? If you don't have any
other files appropriate for import into FileMaker, let me know at
michael.myett@verizon.net and I can send you a small zip code database
in Excel format to test with. My money is on a problem with FileMaker,
maybe a corrupt Excel.imp file. If this is the case a clean reinstall of
FileMaker would do the trick.

Hi Chris,

I agree with Michael that it sounds like FileMaker needs to be reinstalled.
Especially if you can open the Excel file in Excel.

If you want, you can stuff or Zip the file and send it to me and I can test
it for you.

try copy and pasting the excel data to a a new excel file. Then import into a
new blank FMP db - you dont even need to set up the fields first (if the first
row excel is column names, then the FMP fields will adopt those names, in the
process of creation)Then try save as on the original excel file and import that
into a new blank FMP db. May help to isolate...

The problem with the Excel file occured on other, different FM
installations,too.
So I think it's not really FM. Today I achieved to make a work-a-round :)
Instead of importing the Excel file, which is generated from a text file (
which is
itself generated ), i tried to import the text file directly. The problem I
have not tried
before was that the text file was semicolon-seperated, thus not suitable for
FM to
import + the commas in the text file had to be preserved.
So I wrote a c programm, which exchanged the semi-colons by commas and
commas by a combination of '@@' . later on in FM I imported the text file as
comma-seperated and parsed all combinations of '@@' and substitued by a
comma.
:)

thanx for help
chris
