Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
I am a new user to InDesign. How do I import an Illustrator EPS file into InDesign without a white background? It works in QuarkXPress, but not in this application. Surely I don't have to clip every graphic I import?

Please...for your own sake, make up you mind as to where you want to
discuss this. You already started this on the Windows side.
Open the EPS file in Illy and resave as AI. Place that.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Thanks Bob, I must have inadvertenly clicked on Windows when I meant Macintosh. No wonder I couldn't find my post.....
Tried this out and it works a treat. Does this mean that Illustrator EPS files are becoming 'redundant' as far as InDesign goes?

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Kaz,
Read the thread titled "EPS and InDesign", in the "Permanent" section above the ^^^^^^ in this forum.
It's a great discussion on the limitations of EPS in InDesign.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Redundant isn't the right word...obsolete would be a far better
description. That said, you shouldn't be getting white boxes, but I'd
nedd to see the file to know the reason.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
One important note: If you're using EPS, import with the Preview "rasterized from postscript". It's an option that you see if you check the Import Options checkbox in the Place dialog.
As for obsolescence, PDF seems much more prone to dropping fonts then EPS currently in our documents. If you don't need transparency in your artwork, EPS is just fine, imho.
(EDIT: But as you'll read in the EPS thread referenced above, others have different opinions! :D)

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Did you try: ctrl-click - select "Display Performance" - High Quality?
..eps require this for showing transparency in InDesign.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Not true, Nina. For starters, EPS doesn't support true transparency. For
vector only artwork out of Illustrator even with display performance set
to typical the background should be transparent.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
Bob, sorry - as Eric said: import with the Preview "rasterized from
postscript".
But - concerning Illustrator eps as in this case - I should think they
do support transparency...
Is your point that they are not true transparent until they have been
rasterized from postscript?

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
My point is that EPS is flattened artwork. If you use dropshadows or
other transparency features and save as EPS they'll look like garbage on
anything other than a white background.

Re: Importing Illustrator EPS Files INCS2 (v.4)
OK - I confuse transparency with paths then.
