Importing Illustrator files
For some reason I can't place Illustrator CS (.ai) files into InDesign CS
(with latest update). It just imports a bunch of text instead of the paths.
Sometimes I can copy and paste. Any ideas?

Just save these ai files to eps files and try again... The eps is not dead yet.

Re: Importing Illustrator files
I can do that, but why won't InDesign import an .ai file? I would think that would be ideal, considering how adobe wants all creative suite apps to synchronize.

Re: Importing Illustrator files
Try throwing away your InDesign preferences. InDesign CS can definitely import (File > Place) .AI files.

Re: Importing Illustrator files
On saving your paths in Illustrator CS enable option "create PDF compatible file". If it's not enabled you get on import to InDesign CS a text note to do so.
