Default In correct line breaks in ID2.0J

Our company produces manuals in several different European languages and as most of the operators are Japanese we use a Japanese version of ID.
The problem we encountered was mainly with Scandinavian and Central European languages. Words would break without hyphens and we tried to fix this by adding a "No break". The text would go all over the place, leaving large gaps even though words could easily fit.
In the Characters box, the languages appeared with parentheses, but switching to the language had no discernable effect.
These problems caused us many headaches and our bosses are threatening to discontinue use of InDesign unless solutions can be found.

Then you should be using ID C(entral) E(uropean) edition of the software - the Japanese version is just that.
