Inconsistent shockwave performance
Hello all, maybe someone can help me with these questions.
My shockwave movies perform very inconsistently.
Sometimes they run great, other times they stutter and run slowly.
It can literally be a situation where i'll open it up once, and it'll be fine,
and then reload the same movie and get poor performance.
i'll hear the hard drive seek every second and a half or so while the movie's
running.
what might cause this?
any ideas?
(Shockwave player 8.5, misc 2ghz+ PCs, Windows XP.)
thanks much,
dan bandy

Re: Inconsistent shockwave performance
It's very hard to say because it could be so many things... the first thing
that comes to mind would be to check for memory leaks. Copy this giant URL
(watch for line breaks) to search the Macromedia tech notes for the various
leaks.
c=en_us&term=memory+leak)
It could be that your movie is using some function that accesses the hard
drive (preload, import, setpref, etc). If so, is it doing it too often like
every frame?
Do other's shockwave movies perform poorly on your machine too? If so, then
it could be some piece of spyware on your machine or a virus that's
constantly using up CPU cycles and grinding the hard drive.

Re: Inconsistent shockwave performance
I don't think a memory leak could cause this to happen. If so, it should take
some while and it wouldnt be random as described above.
I'm not using any imports, setpref etc. and certanly not doing it every frame.
preload is used within prepareMovie to ensure quick access to gfx-members.
macromedia? seen other users with this problem on groups.google as well..
