My Epson scanner software has a check box deep into an advanced menu that told the software to automatically locate the image. Drove me nuts for a while when I was trying to scan 4x5 negs. Search through all the menus and look for something like that and turn it off. Then you may be able to pre-scan the entire scan bed area and drag a box around the portion of the image that you want.
