    Default InD 3.0--can't select guides

I'm able to set guides by dragging from the ruler as I've always done...only now once I put them down I can't select and move them again or get rid of them and start over. I've restarted InDesign and my computer to no avail. Any thoughts?

    TIA!

Do you have the guides locked?

Guides can reside on layers just like any other object. If you pull your guides out on a layer and then lock the layer, you also lock the guides.

Also check that you are not actually working in preview mode instead of layout mode. That's the most common reason for what you describe.

And if you put the guides on the master page, and you're trying to access them on a document page, you can't until you do a Override All Master Page Items (in the flyout of the Pages palette).

Tom, just for completeness I'd like to mention that the keyboard shortcut for selecting an object on a master page (including guides) from a document page is Cmd+Shift while selecting.

Jon, thanks for bringing that up. I'm actually surprised that - if you have Guides in Back as a preference and you cover a guide on the Master page completely with a Frame - you're able to select and release the guide on the document page (with Cmd+Shift+click) through the box.

....and let's not forget view>lock guides being checked.

If that is checked without any documents open, all new documents will default to that setting

    Ah, same problem, fixed:

View > Grids & Guides > Lock Guides.

    Alt + Ctrl + ; (lock guides)

    is similar to

Alt + Ctrl + ' (show baseline grid)
