Default InDesign CS, export to PDF and CID fonts...

    Hi,

Is it possible to avoid the conversion to CID fonts when using
the export to PDF function from InDesign CS (3.01)?

It seems that the PDF isn't PostScript Level 2 compatible
because of the CID fonts, but what if I wish to make a PS Level
    2 compatible PDF?

I know that I can print to Adobe PDF or make a PS file and run
it through Distiller instead, but I'm just curious to know if
it's also possible with the export to PDF function.

No. You can't export without CID fonts. Those exported PDFs should work
just fine with a TRUE postscript level 2 RIP. Clones might be a problem.

Printing to Adobe PDF will minimize CID font encoding but won't
    eliminate it.

This is one of those subjects that has been discussed to death.

The short answer is no, there is no way to use ID's PDF export and not get
CID encoded fonts. You could of course change all fonts to outlines, but
this is a design faux pas, as most text 12pt and under will loose quality
    (hinting)

Be aware also, that using Acrobat Distiller will NOT guarantee no CID fonts.
If the glyph requires double byte, Distiller will so encode.

    Robert,

That can also happen when two people are on-line at the same time. You posted at 6:25 am (Pacific), and Larry posted at 6:32 (Pacific). He had probably already started answering the same question, when you posted your answer.

We just have too many bright, helpful people here!

I'm sorry. I searched the forum yesterday but couldn't find the
answer to the question whether it is possible to export without
getting CID fonts. Guess I haven't searched good enough then.

    Thanks for your help.

And just so we're clear: it isn't that the PDF isn't PostScript Level 2 compatible, it's the "PostScript-compatible" interpreter on your printer that doesn't contain a full instruction set. CID fonts have been part of the PostScript language for almost ten years now.

From an Adobe paper on CID fonts <http://www.adobe.com/products/postscript/pdfs/cid.pdf> (dated November 1995):

    Q. Will CID fonts work with every PostScript release?

    A. CID-keyed fonts will work with every two-byte capable PostScript release (all Level 2 devices that are 2011 and beyond and Level 1 devices that include the composite font extensions). However, the CID Support Library is required so that the CID-keyed font can be printed on any PostScript Level 2 printer containing versions of the PostScript language before 2015 (see below). Adobe CID font downloaders will also download the CID Support Library to the printer, if the library is not already present and the printer has at least 2 MB of available RAM.

    Q. Will CID fonts work with PostScript language clones?

    A. Clone vendors are responsible for ensuring compatibility of their products with the Adobe standard. Adobe has done nothing to explicitly exclude clone support for the CID format, but the Adobe PostScript interpreter, beginning with release 2015, has been optimized to perform extremely well with the new format.

Quite possibly they will not if, as I do, they use an offline reader for
    access to the Forum.

I don't know what percentage of people use an OLR, but I know that I
prefer these features (threading etc.) over an online forum any day.

As an exercise, I have just logged on via web view. The FAQ posting is
one topic -- with no FAQs! The information in the topic is useful in
that it is suggesting ways of getting help, but from the topic listing,
a new poster would not necessarily see the FAQ topic, nor consider it
useful to view as it appears to have only one posting.

Perhaps it would be useful, for people who access the way I do, to have
the FAQ automatically posted once a month, as a reminder of other ways
    to find information?

I am not out to flame (or inflame!) anyone here, it's just that people
are inherently lazy, and, whilst I agree that to see the same topic
asked time after time is annoying, I do appreciate those that recommend
searching, but give the answer anyway. There is no worst feeling that
when you have asked a perfectly valid question, you get responses that
make you feel as if you are a moron or worse. Everyone has to start
    somewhere!

Okay. I thought that it was impossible to get that PDF out
on PostScript Level 2 devices because of the warnings from
    Acrobat: <http://home18.inet.tele.dk/madsen/indesign/fonte>.
The first PDF is made by printing to Distiller and the second
    is an exported one.
