    Default InDesign CS performance issues

    * My company has recently purchased numerous copies of Adobe Creative Suites InDesign Premium edition. These copies have been installed on Dell Optiplex GX270 desktops. The desktops have 1GB of RAM and a 2.8 MHZ PIV processor.

We use a centralized datamanagement structure which means the majority of InDesign documents are stored on file servers in the corporate office. Some of our offices have local servers which have InDesign documents. Is accessing InDesign documents across a WAN or LAN a first class no-no? Should I face the reality that InDesign CS likes to deal with all converted PageMaker and new InDesign documents loccally from the Dell desktop?

I have been experiencing issues with text tools not responding instantaneously. The cursor will appear in a body of text after a 5-10 second delay time. Highlighting text in a body of text takes the same amount of time. Placing an image can take several minutes. When InDesign opens a PageMaker 6.0 or 7.0 document, it make take several minutes.

I realize the obvious solution is not utilize centalized datamanagement solution and to consider opening documents locally. Additionally, I realize that Adobe will not support documents accessed over a "network"

Does anyone have any suggestions on better courses of action?

    Dear Dazed & Befuddled

Old hands will tell you that a correctly configured and expertly
maintained network is a rare thing, but when you have one InDesign works
    just fine across it.

Are you using version cue? AFAIK this works over a network to create a
local file for you to work on.

I would suggest the poor responsiveness is unrelated to the network, as
the document must be in memory by then. Though of course it may have to
do with the temporary files InDesign creates to save your ass when the
    workstation crashes.

just my two cents, but we work with files on our network all the time and I have had no problems with either 2.0 or CS versions. And I have had things crash but those great ass catchers have worked perfectly.

Pagemaker files take longer than any other format to convert for me as well. Just blame Pagemaker. Pagemaker's also the slowest Adobe application I have used by far.

Does your machine need a rebuild, serious defrag, or severe file maintennance? Sound like it's just bogged down by that or if you're running a significant amount of programs simultanueously or in the background that use the same resources.

Don't forget viruses and spyware. We have a firewall on our network, but
lots of stuff dribbles through. I had a computer that stopped responding
yesterday. I thought it was various Windows 98 memory leak/bloated
registry/poor maintenance issues until I removed Nortons, installed AVG
Antivirus and Ad-Aware and found a mess of viruses and cookies slowing
things down. Runs great now (or as great as an ancient PIII 750 can be
    expected)
