InDesign CS Saving Too Slow

Greetings.

My company recently upgraded from InDesign 2.0 to InDesign CS, and we have noticed that InDesign CS takes an incredibly long time to save files. For a small file of about 15 pages, InDesign CS takes several minutes, and for larger files with over 200 pages, InDesign CS takes hours. All of the files we've had this problem with (which are all of the files we tried to save in InDesign CS) have had numerous large (3-5MB) uncompressed TIFF files linked into them. We saved basically identical files in the InDesign 2.0 without any problems (and some of the files we've had trouble with in InDesign CS were actually converted from InDesign 2.0 files).

We are running Windows 2000 SP4 on a dual-processor 2.4Ghz Xeon computer with 1GB 533Mhz DDR, an AGP 8X nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 w/128MB Video RAM, and a 7200RPM Seagate hard drive.

Where or what are you saving to?

How many applications are running besides InDesign that are RAM hogs?

Check the task manager.

The problem occurs both when saving to the network and when saving to the local disk.

InDesign is the only application running besides Windows services (and we don't have any running that aren't running on a default install of Windows 2000). We do not use any anti-virus software on the desktop because we have a server-based anti-virus system, so the problem couldn't be caused by a virus scanner.

That's small when you are judging the size by the number of pages but what size is the saved file when you are done saving? Are your images linked or embedded?

If you embed your images it will cause your files to become extremely big in some cases.

The 15-page file in question is about 14MB. The images are linked in.

Is there anything else I should be checking in InDesign's preferences?

Have you checked to see if there are any virii or spyware running on the
computer?

Yes we have, and there are not. We reformatted one of the computers we've been having this problem on, and I will test saving a large InDesign CS document (about 75 pages) on it, to see if reformatting fixes the problem.

Is InDesign CS known to perform much better on Windows XP than Windows 2000?

We tried saving a 71-page document on a computer that was just recently reformatted, and it took 5.2 hours. The document is 61.5MB.

We're going to try saving the document on a laptop running Windows XP to see if the problem is caused by either OS or hardware. Is InDesign known to be incompatible with any hardware/software?

We have noticed that it also takes a long time for InDesign CS to display the File Info window after we click on File->File_Info. Does that suggest to anyone what the problem might be caused by? Does XMP conflict with anything?

I think this problem you are experiencing is unheard of. This is probably why you aren't getting helpful answers from anyone. I think we are all completely puzzled.

Sorry that we can't help it just sounds like something that I would have to be at the workstation itself to find out how to fix it.

Hopefully someone else that has experienced the same will come along with a solution for you.

We've done our best to narrow down the problem, and ruled out a couple of possibilities as best we could:
1) It's not the network. We have the same problem whether the image files are on a network share or on the local disk.
2) It's not the operating system. We tried saving the document on a Windows XP machine, and it still took a long time. However, the specs of the XP machine were not identical to those of the Windows 2000 machines. The XP machine is a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop with a 2.8Ghz Intel Pentium IV CPU and 512MB RAM.

However, one of my coworkers tried creating a large document by taking one of the samples ("Women in Transportation") and duplicating the pages several times, and that saved just fine, which means it's the documents that we're working with. Duplicating the pages of a small document DOES cause InDesign to take a very long time to save the file, so the only difference I can think of is the content. Are there any known problems with the interaction between InDesign CS and uncompressed TIFFs? We are generating the files using scripting, if that makes any difference.

Can anyone from Adobe shed some light on the proper troubleshooting steps to take next?

Sounds like antivirus software or a gamer's video card could be prime suspects. If the antivirus from the network can be turned off and its still slow, suspect a corrupt document file.

We have our anti-virus software running only on the gateway to our network, but the gateway is not involved in any of the network transactions involved in saving the InDesign document (I checked that with tcpdump). You said the gamer's video card could be a prime suspect. What do you mean? Might the GeForce 4 card cause problems with InDesign CS? What sort of video card should we be using?
