Indexing scanned documents
Does anyone know of a method for indexing scanned documents without converting them to text with Capture?
Attorneys have Bates numbers, but I have been told this system is not suitable for writers or researchers who want it just for themselves, or to share with a few others.
At the moment I have Adobe 5.0.5 on WIndows 200 XP Pro. I am thinking of upgrading to 6.0.1.
Thanks for any suggestions

Re: Indexing scanned documents
The documents will have to be OCR'd in some way before there is anything to index. That is, unless you only want to index the metadata, in which case you will have to add this to each scanned document.
What is the problem in using Capture?

Re: Indexing scanned documents
What do you mean by "indexing"? You seem to be talking about two
different things - providing a searchable index to all the text in
documents, and adding an index number to a file, so you can search for
the index number. What do you want to do?

Re: Indexing scanned documents
I use 5.05 as well and the only way I know of to index documents without OCR, is to provide keywords in the document properties (ctrl + d) or add a keyword text field to the document and put the keywords in as "default" entry.
If you want to search with keywords in the document properties, you have to select "document information" in the edit -> preferences -> search box.

Re: Indexing scanned documents
Andrew E D Clark, Aandi Inston, Gerry Heinemann: thanks for the replies. Sorry for not being clear.
I tried key word searches but when I tested a document using this as suggested using Ctrl+d, save, close, then search, the document was not found. Have I missed a step?
I would prefer to search text. However I would have to check OCR'd docs for errors. I have a lot of docs, some with graphs, tables, and pictures. To avoid having to do this I have thought about experimenting with the 'exact' or 'compact' searchable image tools. Do you have experience with these? I don't want to have a huge increase in file size.
I hope this is clearer, Thanks again.

Re: Indexing scanned documents
No I did not. Is this step needed for all search routines?

Re: Indexing scanned documents
For cross document search, you need an "index" and that's what makes
them.
