INSERT programming question - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

Hi, I have two databases on SQL Server 2000 named TLCTest and TLC. I wish to copy the contents of a table named "Container" in TLCTest to a table also named "Container" in TLC. I think that the best way to do this is through an SQL INSERT statement. However I can't seem to get the syntax correct. I think this is kind of what I need but the exact syntax eludes me...: INSERT Dbo.TLC.Container (ContainerNo,Type,Size) VALUES (SELECT ContainerNo, Type, Size FROM dbo.TLCTest.Container) Am I right in assuming that I can simply execute this in Query yser? Cheers Chris Strug...

    Default INSERT programming question

    Hi,

I have two databases on SQL Server 2000 named TLCTest and TLC.

I wish to copy the contents of a table named "Container" in TLCTest to a
table also named "Container" in TLC.

I think that the best way to do this is through an SQL INSERT statement.
However I can't seem to get the syntax correct.

I think this is kind of what I need but the exact syntax eludes me...:

    INSERT Dbo.TLC.Container (ContainerNo,Type,Size)
VALUES (SELECT ContainerNo, Type, Size FROM dbo.TLCTest.Container)

Am I right in assuming that I can simply execute this in Query yser?

    Cheers

    Hi Chris,

INSERT either uses VALUES() or a SELECT statement, not both. And objects are
identified in SQL Server with [server].[database].[owner].object, and you
had owner.database.object (dbo.TLCTest.Container instead of the correct
TLC.Dbo.Container ), so I corrected that as well.

    The correct syntax is:
    INSERT TLC.Dbo.Container (ContainerNo,Type,Size)
SELECT ContainerNo, Type, Size FROM TLCTest.dbo.Container
