Default install hangs, kubuntu on a Biostar Tforce 6100-939

Trying to install kubuntu 64bit on a Biostar tforce 6100-939. Seems to
go okay until the reboot and then hangs after 'checking battery
state........OK'. Same thing happens with the kubuntu 64bit LiveCD, and
thinking the on-board video was the cause I tried re-installing with an
old S3 Trio PCI card but got the same result. I'm beginning to wonder if
this chipset is too new for kubuntu? I might try again after disabling
the audio in the bios because Knoppix 4.02 DVD boots and works fine but
doesn't install audio drivers. Can you very knowledgeable people think
of anything else I should try?

Disabling audio didn't work, also tried disabling ACPI, no go. Then
booted LiveCD in expert mode. after the line
    'checking battery state........OK' it returned:

No more processes left in this runlevel

and kept looping this every 5 minutes, but in random order. Alt-Ctrl-Del
    re-boot and quit for tonight. I have a 3200+ Sempron OC'd @ 2500MHz
memtest86 OK and prime95 stable overnight, but might set to default and
retry tomorrow, I am sitting way too close to my shotgun to continue
tonight. I will let you know............

Setting bios to optimal did not help. Well, I think I'll just try
    another distro. Any suggestions?

The fact that Knoppix ran, would imply that your problem is not
fundamental to Debian type distros. My thoughts, as a debian and kubuntu
user: Install Debian from Knoppix; see "Knoppix Hacks" by Kyle Rankin
chapter 4. Debian Sid is newer and more bleeding edge than ubuntu, but if
you're careful, you can make it work without danger. The only problem is
no AMD64 for another year, so you're stuck with 32-bits.

Install Knoppix from Knoppix. This has the advantage that you can install
software with Klik, (hack #30 in Rankin's book). It's the "modern" way,
you'll be able to smirk when everyone is talking the next big thing in
    Linux, two years from now.

Wait for Dapper (Ubuntu 6.04) and try again. At least you'll be able to
    use AMD64 compiled s/w.

I've noticed on sites where ubuntians congregate that Athlon64s seem to
work better with Ubuntu than Semprons. ???

    Good Luck,
    Al

Interestingly enough, I have been unable to install Kubuntu 5.1, yet
Ubuntu 5.1 installs w/o complaint. Strange, eh?

Thanks for the reply. This confirms my belief that KDE is causing the
problem. By the time I finish typing this ubuntu will be finished
downloading so I will give it a try. Will let you know. Thanks again.

H'mm, I should have known we couldn't trust a guy who prefers vi to emacs
and starts out his distro with Gnome! :-)

oops, wrong again. I installed ubuntu and had the same problem so I
ditched that and tried kubuntu again. The install defaulted to the
nvidia driver and during the install X config didn't give me the option
to change it. It would just stop. I then booted with a knoppix CD and
changed the Xorg.conf file to use the vesa driver, re-booted and it
booted right into KDE. There may be an easier way to edit this file but
a noobix like me needs all the help he can get, so the GUI in knoppix
was just the ticket rather than learning all that command line syntax.
My main problem seems to be that although I started using ms-dos in 1986
I am totally lost in the depths of linux. Now I just need to get the
sound drivers installed. Here we go again.....

Fixed that already, installed a soundcard that I found on the bottom
shelf in the basement, an Avance ALS4000. Kubuntu knew what to do with
it, but when I booted to XP it didn't have a clue.....I may try to get
the onboard nforce sound working someday if I need that PCI slot but
until then happy Kubuntu to you!
