installed fonts unusable in InDesign CS
I find that font faces in some families are Open Type and some are True Type since converting to CS and Windows XP. InDesign allows the use of the fonts when typing, however after saving and reopening the document, the fonts show as missing. The two offending fonts are Arial Black italic and ITC Franklin Gothic Medium. I already trashed my font prefs and it was not corrected. This also relates to the question Michael Savage posted June 30. Is this problem related to the mix of Open Type and True type within the family and how can I correct this? Why were those two not converted when the rest of the family was?

Yes and you can correct it by deleting your true type versions from your system.

Again, please watch what you're posting. Deleting certain fonts
installed by Windows can cause some serious problems.

Re: installed fonts unusable in InDesign CS
So is there another solution? I use these versions of the font quite often and like having an expanded family. I don't just want to delete them if I don't have to.

Re: installed fonts unusable in InDesign CS
That's right, I should have said remove them, my bad.
I removed the Arial fonts that are on my system and I saved them in a folder just in case. I have not had problems with my system after removing those fonts but that's not to say that you are not going to have problems on your system.
The only Arial I should have in my system that isn't OpenType should be ARBLI___.TTF. That's the Arial Black Italic font.
So... take them out of your Windows\Fonts directory and save them somewhere else in case you need to put them back.
Actually, just before pressing the "Post Message" button. I double checked to see what is in my fonts folder and it seems that Windows has replaced the stupid font that I don't want back in there.
It's ARIALUNI.TTF, the Unicode version. I suppose Internet Explorer or something else needs that font so somehow it got replaced.
All I can tell you is to try to ensure that you are using the OpenType font when you are working with InDesign. I am using that right now without problems.
Check in your \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts to see if the fonts are repeated in there. If so, REMOVE the ones that are and see if that helps.

Re: installed fonts unusable in InDesign CS
I apologize for the earlier posting about deleting your fonts. I mistakenly said DELETE when what I really meant to say was REMOVE and BACKUP.

Re: installed fonts unusable in InDesign CS
Do I have to purchase an Open Type Arial Black italic to make it work with the others? And see the addition to my original post regarding testing with the post-script printer (laser). I don't mind work arounds, but don't like when things don't work no matter what I do. So the ultimate answer would tell me how I can use Arial Black italic and the Franklin Gothic Meduim. I'm stumped.
