versie kan ik het beste gebruiken?

De meeste mensen die deze NG bezoeken spreken geen nederlands.
Je kunt je vraag beter in het engels stellen of de nederlandse NG

On such an old machine I'd go for an older version of linux.
You can download them from the web. Try searching with google, or
go to the vendors sites ([url]www.redhat.com[/url], [url]www.suse.com[/url] etc)

You sound as if linux is new to you. If so, you'd better start
with a newer distro on a newer PC. The installation procedures have
improved a lot over the years. Or use Knoppix, without installing
anything, just to see if linux suits your needs.

The current Debian (3.0 aka Woody) worked fine on a 386. Well, X wasn't too
fast, but it did work.

Especially older compaqs have some fairly bizarre features, such as part of
the BIOS being on a special hard disk partition. You have been warned.
