Installing Linux from DVD-RW drive - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I just got a brand new system with a Pineer DVR-A06U DVD/CD writer. I am trying to install Linux from a CD, but Linux install won't identify the DVD drive. It prompts me to select one of the drivers and the ones that I have selected didn't work. Pioneer doesn't seem to have Linux drivers for the kind of DVD-RW I got. What can I do at this point besides replacing the drive? Thanks....

    Hi,

AFAIK Pioneer manufactures DVD-R (not +R) drives, so I don't see
much of a problem. The "generic" driver should be good enough.

Which distro are you using, and what does it say?

    So long,

If you have a broadband Internet connection, most distributions let you
download a basic floppy disk install (4 or 5 diskettes) that you can use to
launch the rest of the install over the Internet. I installed Debian this
    way.

    Thomas,
I am trying to install RedHat 8.0. So, first it asks me what kind of
installation I want to initiate. I select installing from CD. Then it
prompts me to select a driver and lists a whole bunch of them. I
select one and press ok. It tries to access my DVD drive, but then
chokes and throws me back to the installation type menu. I tried
    several drivers with no luck.
    Ideas?

    Thanks.

    Jim,
unfortunately I don't have a high speed internet connection.

    Thanks.

What about buying or borrowing a cheap CD-ROM drive? Sounds ridiculous, but
it might be your best solution.
