The problem could be that XP is turning off the network card to save
power. In Device Manager, open the network card's properties and look
for a Power Management tab. If there's a setting "Allow the computer
to turn off this device to save power", un-check it.

What does the error message say?

That's not a valid IP address with the usual subnet mask of
    255.255.255.0.

    It says:
    "Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area
Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request
    has timed out.
An error occurred while renewing interface Network Bridge
(Network Bridge) 5 : unable to contact your DHCP server.
    Request has timed out."
