Default Internet not accessable after Windows Update

I am professional technician working in the field here in
Denver. In the last 3 months, on at least 4 different XP
PCs, the PCs suddlenly stopped being able to connect to
internet. Nothing I tried corrected the problem with the
exception doing a system restore to a date prior to the
problem starting. The only commonality I could detect is
that a Windows update had been installed just prior to
    the problem occuring.
I have searched the KB but have found nothing.
Anyone else seen this problem or have any clues?

use netsh diag show dns to check your DNS. if they are correct, use nslookup
    command to troubleshoot it.
