Default Is .dcr extension = Director file extension ?

I'm a newbie and saw some files on a website ending in .dcr...

1 - Is the .dcr file type a Macromedia Director file?
2 - Does it take the Shockwave player to see a Director file or a .dcr file?

    thanks for any info.

A .DCR file is a Director Shockwave Movie, and yes, requires the Shockwave
Flash Player (which includes both Shockwave and Flash Players).

DCR's can only be viewed via an HTML page, they cannot be viewed as a
stand-alone (such as SWF files can).

DCRs are protected files that cannot be modified in Director after having
been created. This is the file format in which Dirctor movies are published.
The main Director file format for raw files which can be changed is .DIR.

    not entirely a complete response...

DCRs are "shocked" files for use on the internet ... they are protected as such.

DXRs are the actual protected files used for Director movies ... Cdroms, Kiosks, software, etc should be using DXRs in conjunction with their EXEcutables, not DCR.

    DIRs are the editable versions
