Is digital zoom good for anything? - Photography

It can't be any better than Photoshop, can it? This is going to be cool if I'm wrong. : -)...

If you have photoshop, don;t touch digital zoom.
It uses a crude interpolation to "stretch" the cropped image out to the
    appropriate pixel size.
you can always do a better job with more control on the computer than you
can on camera.. same goes for on-camera sharpening.

That would be mu response too.

    But just a thought:
Why assume that the algorithm used in Photoshop is better that the one used
by the camera? Could it be the other way around?

Photoshop uses pretty sophisticated resampling routines and,
best of all, CUSTOMIZABLE ones. I don't think the built-in
software in ANY digital camera can match that.

I agree. Don't mess with the digital zoom and use Photoshop for that
purpose -- it's MUCH better at it and gives you much more flexibility and
    control.

Digital zoom is good for marketing the camera to gullible customers.
    Obviously, you are not one.
