Is Director the right app for this project?
Hi, I'm new to Macromedia products (beyond minor Flash dabbling). But I am an experienced professional C/C++ and Java Programmer as well as being able to work in Web Scripting languages/implementations including PHP, JavaScript, JSP, and ASP. So, while I am not experienced with the Macromedia scripting languages, I understand what is involved in learning and using a new scripting language like Lingo/Action Script.
The company I work for is in the planning phases of a project that must meet three general objectives.:
(1) Access data stored in a local data source.
(2) Present that data to users on MacOSX and Win 98/XP systems with a reasonably identical UI.
(3) Periodically once per week/day connect to the Internet and retrieve a data update that will then be added to the local data source.
C/C++ written for both systems is not a good option (time/expense). We have considered Java and RealBASIC/VB as possible solutions but aren't very excited with either approach.
It is my understanding based on my rudimentary Flash knowledge that it cannot accomplish objective 3 as it has no access to the local filesystem. That said, I have been led to believe that some options exist potentially invovling ColdFusion + Flash. However, implementing any server-side/non-Mac supporting technologies like ColdFusion isn't going to happen.
I was told by several people that Director might be able to deliver exactly what we would like. Could anyone give me any advice on whether or not Director can be used to meet the objectives set forth? I tried looking around the Macromedia site, but all the Director info seems geared to the as yet unreleased MX2004 version -- and I have no interest in wasting my time reading manuals etc. only to find out the the basic functionality we need is lacking.
Any answers yeah or nay would be greatly appreciated.

The answer to your question is yes. Director can do all the things you
require without breaking a sweat.
Director won't be able to import Flash MX 2004 SWF files until the release of> Can DirectorMX work with FlashMX 2004 projects or does it require use of

Director MX 2004... shouldn't be too long now though.
