I/m learning ID -- old version. Any way I opened a quark file and it
was a bit scrambled but that's another matter.

I tried to import an Ill file in eps (an old habit) and there's this
white curly string that comes out transparent EVEN after I mess with
threshhold etc..preserve paths in Ill preferences box, turn on hires
preview. .

However when I import a pdf or a native Ill file, it's fine! I'm used
to sending eps and tiff files to printers. Is there something I'm
missing with eps files though?
