Is my powermac worth the $ to upgrade? - Mac Applications & Software

I am getting different answers about my Powermac 5260(don't laugh.,please) from Apple over the phone. It's slow (I know it's old) and runs system7.6.1 and I want to upgrade it, will that make it faster ? I can not afford a new Mac untill tax time in the spring. Okay Apple says that it can sell me os9.1 for 103.00 and that it will make my computer faster. I was also told since I am getting anew Mac in the spring, to just get OS8 but Apple says they don't sell it. My sister is trying to sell me her ...

I am getting different answers about my Powermac 5260(don't laugh.,please) from
Apple over the phone. It's slow (I know it's old) and runs system7.6.1 and I
want to upgrade it, will that make it faster ? I can not afford a new Mac
untill tax time in the spring.
Okay Apple says that it can sell me os9.1 for 103.00 and that it will make my
computer faster. I was also told since I am getting anew Mac in the spring, to
just get OS8 but Apple says they don't sell it. My sister is trying to sell me
her windows something or other for 100.00 but I like my Mac and I don't want to
deal with the virus stuff that always seems to hit windows.

I basically want the computer faster, for email, web surfing, my kids want to
play the games that have flash/shockwave it them ( can find the helpers for my
    system).

What should I do besides get a new Mac. I've had the computer for 8 years.

I should mention that I have never had a problem with the computer
( I did replace the cd rom once).

    thank you !

I won't even pretend to tell you what to do, but, you can buy an Apple
OEM disk of 9.1 for $48 at:

    Good luck

Don't upgrade to 9.1, it requires more ram than you have and it will do
nothing but slow you down. I'd stick with 7.6.1 or up to 8.6 max. If
it's working fine and you can live with that, keep it til tax time.
Otherwise, bite the bullet and pull out that plastic.

<< still have 7.6 you probably have older
applications and minimal memory. If that assumption is correct, upgrading the
OS will not increase the computer's speed. It will decrease it.

My advice? Save your money and hold out until the spring. Your current computer
really isn't worth investing in any longer. >>

Thank you (all that did!) for answering, so I will wait till spring for a new
Mac, but is there a way to get the helper applications like shock and flash for
    my 7.6 system.

My kids want to play games on line and even get into web sites, but they all
say I need shock or flash and the macromedia site does not have a download for
    my system.

    Thanks once more

Beige G3's are going for about $100 on Ebay, maybe a little more. One of
these machines, although an older model, would represent a significant
upgrade from the machine you now have.

Maria, you could try this one:
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/flash/english/flashPre6/macppc/
    5.0r41b/flashplayer5installer.hqx

It is version 5 of the player for pre-Mac OS 8 systems. Might work, might
not. However, you must be running a PPC system, not 68k. All the old flash
    players are archived here:
