Uncle Tom,
The requirement to calibrate and profile your display comes from Elements support of ICC color management. You can use Elements without having ever heard of color management, but the results will be more unpredictable. Most image editors and viewers do not support color management at this time, and those other applications clearly don't support ICC profiles either.
