Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
I just updated my operating system from Panther to Tiger. I have OS X 10.4. I wanted to update my Reader software (I currently have Acrobat Reader 5.0) but Reader 7.0 doesn't support OS X 10.4, or does it?

Reader 7.0.1 Does. I suspect 7.0 does.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Acrobat Pro 7 works, so I see no reason that Reader 7 won't. I haven't
tested all possibilities, but I have opened Reader 7 to read pdfs. That
works.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Reader 7 seems to work. When you first launch, it will tell you that it is fixing missing components.
Both Reader and Acrobat generate a string of reports to the console log along the following lines each time they launch (but dozens at a clip):
2005-05-06 11:45:24.013 Adobe Reader[432] WARNING: _wrapRunLoopWithAutoreleasePoolHandler got kCFRunLoopExit, but there are no autorelease pools in the stack.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
I just updated from Panther to Tiger and when I try to distill a postscript file in Distiller 5 now I get errors. Anyone know what I can do to fix it?

No, but you could start by telling us the errors (Copy/paste).

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Sorry about that. It's been an all-day affair trying to troubleshoot this one. Actually I've had a few experienced techies look into it today and they've determined that it must be a bug in Tiger.
Here's what's going on: Whenever I try to distill a file, the Distiller 5 status bar shows that it's doing its thing and then finishes (actually with no errors) but then - hey where's my f-ing PDF file? Nothing. I don't get one. I've tried the recommended fixes - repair disk permissions, enable file/folder permissons in "get info", deleted some preference files. I've checked out a few other threads as well and it looks like I'm not the only one. Either Apple or Adobe better get off their butts and come up with a patch pretty soon.
You got something up your sleeve I don't know about?
Thanks for responding.

You think Adobe will produce a patch for Distiller VERSION 5? I don't
think that's realistic. Yes, if 7.0 doesn't work, that's a
possibility.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Danny,
I can reproduce what you are seeing. I have tried manually distilling a
postscript file with Distiller 5.0.5, Printing to FrameMaker PDFWriter,
Printing to Apple's Laserwriter to create pdf files and it just won't
work. This is a major bummer. However, I can create postscript files in
Frame and/or other classic programs and manually distill in Distiller 7.0.
Like Aandi, I don't expect Adobe to fix the problem. If anyone can fix
it, it will have to be Apple, since they broke it.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Thanks Mike. I recently downloaded a demo version of Acrobat 7 and didn't like it. Too convoluted. Since all I really need to solve my problem is Distiller 7, is there somewhere I can go to download just that and not the whole package?
Thanks for recreating the problem on your end and for your time. Much appreciated.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
I have found that I can now create pdf files from Distiller 5.0.5 in
Classic mode in tiger, if I turn off BOTH the embed thumbnails and
Optimize for fast view under the Job Options dialog box. The key was
finding someone who had Distiller 5.0.5 working, then fiddling with the
fonts, job settings and preferences, until I could finally create a pdf
file. Progress...

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
So it sounds like PDFLib is broken. Sometimes this happens because Distiller is looking for fonts that aren't where it thinks they are. It might help to through away any adobefnt.lst files (although I can't remember if those existed in classic or not, but I think they did). Then, clear the Font Locations and re-point them to known Font locations. This helps to clear up PDFLib problems now and then.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
think both thumnails and optimizing are things that happen after the pdf has been created. Could it be the system locks down the file before the post processing of the file has begun/finished.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
Removing the Adobefnt.lst files, all preferences, font cache's didn't do
the trick. I'll try re-installing Acrobat 5.0.5 when I have a free
moment, but at the present time turning off optimization and thubmnails
does the trick for me.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
I just want to be clear here, PDFLib is not working in this case. The stuff you turned off is all post-processing stuff from the PDF Library. It certainly doesn't mean that Adobefnt.lst files, or any font files for that matter, are the cause, but something is certainly causing this corruption. Before you reinstall, try to make sure you yank out everything Acrobat 5.0.5 related. One problem I used to see back in Acrobat 5 days was, if I had Acrobat installed on more then one partition, I wasn't always launching the Acrobat application I thought I was. Sometimes the system would go and look on another partition even if I dragged a PDF on to the desired application icon. The point is, Distiller, for whatever reason, may be looking acros partitions to get resources, so you really have to be thorough when you prepare to re-install the app.

Re: Is Reader Tiger Compatible?
I have just done a clean install of Tiger on one partition and used the Classic installation on my old Tiger upgrade from Panther. Distiller works fine. No problems. So there must be something that can go wrong when doing a simple upgrade. Now to find out if there is a fix.
