Is there an InDesign CS equivalent to Quark xtags?
We have xtags set up for formatting copy for large catalogs and direct mail pieces. We have style sheets created, we import xtg files and the copy comes in all formatted. We would like to switch from Quark to InDesign but need to know where to find info on this function. We know that there was an extension for InDesign 2 but there doesn't seem to be one for CS. Any helpful information is greatly appreciated.

And it works on import as well, if Mike's message doesn't imply that to you.

Re: Is there an InDesign CS equivalent to Quark xtags?
Thank you Dan and Mike for your help. Now I need to learn how to create the tags or find a way to convert my existing xtags (that someone else created) into InDesign's tagged text.

Re: Is there an InDesign CS equivalent to Quark xtags?
How do you set up tageed text? Do you just export copy set with your style sheets?
Also, if you already have Quark xtags set up, is there a way to convert them to InDesign CS tagged text without redoing the work?
Thanks!

You could use search & replace to convert your QuarkXPress tags to Indesign tage, but that could be a long process. You could also import your QuarkXPress tagged text into QuarkXPress, export it as a MS Worst file, import that intop InDesign, then export that as InDesign tagged text.
There's a PDF on the CDs that shipped with InDesign that might help you.

Re: Is there an InDesign CS equivalent to Quark xtags?
Unfortunately, ID Tags are much more verbose than XPress Tags. It's been a long time since I've done much with XPress Tags or their muscular cousins, XTags, but I used to be quite fluent in both dialects. The first time I looked at ID's tagging language I almost died. I believe there's an option to make them less verbose, but even then it seemed terribly inefficient. I didn't pursue it any further since I'm no longer in the textbook composition business.
If you search the forums, you should be able to find a discussion of ID Tags from a couple of months ago. In that thread, Ole Kvern commented there were some XPress functions that could not be replicated with ID's current tagging scheme. I don't recall the specifics of the discussion, but I remember thinking that Adobe would have trouble penetrating some markets until the developers beefed up ID's tagging.
