Default Issue with AS/400 DB2 query | ByteArray object error

We are running MX6.1 and just came across an error from data retrieved from our
AS/400 (iSeries). We are receiving the 'ByteArray objects cannot be converted
to strings' error when outputting a field that is a 12-character field in the
database. When the SQL is run directly on the database server, it returns
valid data. However when the CF template is displayed, it either throws that
error or, if we wrap it with the ToString function it returns garbage. I've
tried changing some settings in the Database Connection, in the ODBC itself and
using various encoding sets in the ToString function. Any other ideas?
