Ok, going to try and explain the best I can. I define the term NOVICE when it comes to graphics.

The page listed in the link above has a graphic in the center. It's "supposed" to animate but I can't figure out how to do that.

    1) I used a template from Fireworks and manipulated it to create the original page.
    2) I created the animation in Flash, imported it into FW and saved it as a png file.
    3) I can put the graphic into the page via Dreamworks and it will animated BUT then it blocks the drop down menues and one can't click the links.
    3) When I import the animated gif into FW, it wants to add frames, ok, fine ... but then the index menu is blank on all frames except the first AND it still won't animate.

Any clues?? Since I'm obviously clueless.
Any additional info needed, just ask and I'll provide.

    Thanks for any help,
    Bill

I assume that you mean you tried putting the .swf file on the page but it blocked the menu. That makes sense because .swf files alway play on top.

When you exported the .gif file from Fireworks, what settings did you use...was it exported as an animated .gif?

Correct on the swf file blocking the menu. I tried doing that in Dreamweaver and it didn't work.
I created the animation in Flash and yes I did export it as an animated gif.
I can import it FW in a blank doent and it will animate. I can also import it into the menu doent but then it adds 8 frames (there's 9 total in the animation) to the menu doent and only the 1st of the 9 frames contains the menu, background and animation, the rest just contain the background and animation. The menu's disappear.

Hmm, am I explaining this clear enough? Sorry, this is the best I can do.

All Active content on a page will always rise to the top, so to speak,
including Flash, certain form elements, Java applets, and Active X controls.
This means that they do poke through layers. There is not a good
cross-browser/platform reliable way to solve this issue, but if you can be
confident in your visitors using IE 5+ or NN6+, then you can use the CSS
wmode parameter. It doesn't work in all browsers (NN4) but it's implemented
    in the latest netscapes:

I used the wmode param but that doesn't fix the problem. The menu still unfolds beneath the animation instead of over it, therefore the buttons are unable to be clicked.

I never said it would fix the issue. But it's the only chance you have
before embarking on a redesign. Without seeing your code, however, I have
no idea whether it may, in fact work for you.

Pardon me, there was no malicious intent as I was merely stating that I had tried that. I'm just frustrated that I can't figure out something this simple even though I'm a Macromedia and graphics newbie.
The code is pretty basic and straight forward. The majority is from one of the samples (Custom Pop-Up.png) that came with Fireworks. The balance is the animation. The page that's loaded on the web site listed above isn't the same one I am working on. The png file is over 2 megs, are we allowed to upload an attachment that size here??

I'm trying to give out as much info as possible so I can help someone help me. Sorry if my graphics knowledge is limited, but hey, we all have to start somewhere :)

    Thanks.

If you have tried it, and you are confident that you have tried it
correctly, and if it didn't solve the problem for you, then you must move
your Flash or Layers on the page. There is no alternative that I know of.

    Murray,

I appreciate your attempt to help me resolve my problem. I'm unsure if I am not explaining my intentions of the particular web page correctly or you're not interpretting what I'm saying right. I'm leaning towards the former rather than the latter. Tonight I will see what I can do about getting the code from the page which I am trying desperately to make work the way that I want. Have you viewed the page listed in the link I posted in my first message?? Do you understand that I want the centerpiece to animate and the menus to drop down over it?? These are merely questions, not trying to insult yours nor anyone elses intelligence.

Again, I DO appreciate your efforts.

    Thanks,
    Bill

When I look at the page you have linked -

    http://www.mrnaturl.us/poemindex.html

I can see a center graphic with drop-down menus that apprear above the
center graphic. How is it you want this to behave?

By the way, I note a) that you have used the DW/FW pop-ups and b) that you
have no other text navigation on your site. This means that your site will
not be spidered by Search Engines - you know that, right?

    Murray,

I did some work on it tonight. The page that is up there now is how I want everything to behave. However, it's disjointed because I did it in both FW and DW .... and now I don't even recall how I did it. So if I have to make changes to the menu's, which I know very well I will, I won't be able to. Oyyyy what a mess I'm making.

As for the text navgiation .... not sure what you mean. Are you talking text links instead of all buttons?

I understand the spidering .... with all the hacking and spamming going on, not sure if being my preventing spidering is a good or bad thing anymore.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Love your site man but those popup menus gotta go......build 'em in DW
with layers. (I know you gotta be sick of hearing that ) :)

    1. learn Linda Rathgeber's "tabbed interface"
    (http://www.playingwithfire.com/tool_tips/magic_tabs.html) and instead
of using the onClick behavior on the tabs, use "onMouseOver".

    Next, scoot over to

    http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/menuing/mcloser/index.htm

and build that under the tabbed interface. If you really want the
mouseover behavior you can use css and define a rollover textlink effect.

Trust me- the few hours of learning this stuff that I just shot you is
going to tremendously reduce the stress you'll feel by messing with MM
    popups.

The reason I don't like them is probably the fact that I fooled with
    them for so long. :)

I guess I should have said "Use the tabs as a jumping-off point for
swap-image behavior tactics". :) I mean, he could build the interface as
his own creation or hey, here's an idea: use the tabs as they are (with
onClick) then the tabs could drop down the menus......

I'm just tryin' to get him away from the popups!!! :) :))

Errr wow, ya'll just went wayyyy over my head lol
<---- Novice here .... real novice!!

I appreciate the kind comments regarding my site, thanks.
The critiquing ... well, just bear in mind this is a personal, not professional site and I'm still stumbling along learning all this stuff. The site is a disaster to modify since I used Front Page, Photo Impact, DW, FW, etc. to create it. Some things I do in DW just don't come out the same on a page as they do on the program screen. I just don't have the kind of time it takes to sit down and REALLY learn "one" package. However I really like the Macromedia Studio, especially since everything is together. I like being educated, just be slow and gentle ... please? ok? lol

Ok, well I can appreciate that everyone has a preference. I used what you see because I'm new to all this, it was a menu sample from FW and easily manipulated.

With that said, what are some suggestions for a menu system .... taking into consideration there are well over 100 pages to link?

This place is ALL about learning!! What I would do, assuming it were my

    along the way.

the Projectseven tree menu system would probably be most helpful in this
