Default Issues with Linked images when converting from Pagemaker to IDCS

I'm having some trouble converting Pagemaker files into InDesign CS. I open the Pagemaker file, but it comes up saying that there are bad links in the file and that they could not be restored. The images are located on a networked windows file. Looking at the documents in pagemaker on the old machine running OS 9, the path is correct. Then when opening the pagemaker files in IDCS on the new machine with OS X Panther, it doesn't find them. The exact error message is:

"This document includes one or more broken links to external image files. Click Cancel and then open the document in PageMaker to repair the links. Or click OK to convert the document without the images."

I'm wondering if this could be a networking problem. However, before I try to convert the PageMaker files I establish a link with the server and it shows it as device in Finder, so if InDesign tries to access the path that is saved in PageMaker, it should be able to find it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

open the pagemaker document-UPDATE the links--resave (save as)--then try Indesign again.
you may need to move the links and pagemaker file to the same folder as your Indesign file is in.

Try this, it has worked successfully for me every time.

In PageMaker to to Utilities, Save for Service Provider and Package. This will create a new folder with all links and a copy of your PageMaker document. Try opening your newly created PageMaker document with InDesign. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. I tried updating the links but that did not work. I'm wondering if the way OS 9 is connecting to the network is different from the way OS X is? Which would cause some sort of issue when it goes to look up that link. However, I've also seen it recommended on Adobe documents regarding the switch from Pagemaker to IDCS that you copy over the images you want linked to the same directory as the pagemaker file, so perhaps there is simply something prone to failure when the images are on a different hard drive or directory.

The method of copying the images to the same folder as the Pagemaker file that I'm converting does work, however it creates the links to those images in the same folder. In this case, I need to convert dozens of pagemaker files with images that are scattered about many directories on a network drive, so it would be unreasonable to have to find the images that go with each file and copy them over to the local directory. Is there any other way to properly keep the links over the network?

    Thank you!
