    Default Issues with templates and nested templates

    Hello,
    I hope there is someone out there that can help me.

    I created a website using 1 main template and several nested templates.
    Everything was working correctly. I was able to make changes to the parent
    template and these were updated on the child templates without a problem. Then
    somehow, I don't know what I did, but I deleted the following code from the
    parent template:

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="titleofpage" -->
    <title>Recipes</title>
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
    <!--
    function MM_openBrWindow(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0
    window.open(theURL,winName,features);
    }
    //-->

    Now if I try to save a change to the parent template, I get the following
    message:
    Inconsistent Region Names
    Some regions in this document have no corresponding regions in the new
    template.

    title of page <Not resolved>

    If I try to move content to new region <Nowhere> it tells me that "optional
    region 1 and 2" are also <Not resolved> and it throws everything all the
    content of the child templates into columns that don't exist in the parent
    template.

    If I try to move content to any of the other regions that do exist, it also
    moves all of the content around.

    Please please help. I don't know how to fix this without having to start all
    over again. I've already spent hours and hours trying to get it to work the
    first time.

    Here is the code for the parent template:

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"

    Open the parent template in Notepad/TextEdit, and paste those lines back in.

    Default Re: Issues with templates and nested templates

    Hello,
    Thanks for your reply. I tried opening the parent template in
    Notepad/TextEdit, and pasting the lines back in and it erased everything in the
    parent template, nothing was visible when I opened it in dreamweaver. Only the
    code showed in the code window. Also when I saved the changes it said that I
    had an error on line 4 of the <head> tag.

    Is there something else that I can try?
    Thanks,
    J

    First thing to understand. This is not magic. The files are simply text
    files containing HTML markup.

    Pasting those lined back in at the top of the page cannot possibly erase
    everthing in the parent template unless you had everything selected when you
    pasted them back in. Did you?

    Can you post a link to the parent template page, and I'll paste the content
    back for you?

    I understand that it's not magic. I am trying my best to understand this.
    However, I am not a coder.
    I did what you said and the code was there but the page had nothing on it.

    I've tried troubleshooting this myself and have had no luck. This is why I've
    come to this forum for help.

    Here is a link to the page: [url]http://www.miocoalition.com/Templates/MIO_3.dwt[/url]

    I really don't know what else to do other than to start over.

    Thanks for your help.

    This page you have linked below is not the page from which you deleted the
    previously posted code, right?

    If it is then I am very confused. Your previous post showed the deletion
    inclluding a <title> tag, yet the code on the page below is not missing one.
    Can you clear that up for me, please?

    No. I didn't paste it into the original. I made a copy of it so that I would
    have an original to revert to in case the file got messed up even more. Here is
    a link to the child templates that I'm refering to.

    [url]http://www.miocoalition.com/Templates/mio-recipe.dwt[/url]
    [url]http://www.miocoalition.com/Templates/mio-recipe-breads.dwt[/url] (this is nested to
    the one above)

    Here is the parent template again:
    [url]http://www.miocoalition.com/Templates/MIO_3.dwt[/url]

    the <title> tag in the parent template doesn't match the <title> tag in the
    nested templates. This whole section found in the child templates is missing in
    the parent template:

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="titleofpage" -->
    <title>Recipes</title>
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
    <!--
    function MM_openBrWindow(theURL,winName,features) { //v2.0
    window.open(theURL,winName,features);
    }
    //-->

    Somehow got deleted and so when I want to update the parent template. I get
    the Inonsistent region message.
    Again, I don't know how I deleted this.

    If you can help me fix this, you have no idea how much I will appreciate it.

    Thanks for your help.

    Personally, I think you are painting yourself into a corner using this
    nested template scheme, but that's just my opinion. In my experience, such
    schemes become inflexible and troublesome in the long run.

    Good going.

    Go here -

    [url]http://www.murraytestsite.com/MIO_3.zip[/url]

    There is your fixed template file. Download it into the Templates folder of
    your site. Rename your existing MIO_3.dwt to some backup name, and REFUSE
    the file update prompt. Unzip the new one into the Templates folder and
    allow it to update files. You should be all set now.

    Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. As far as using nested templates,
    is there a better way of doing this or an alternative to nested templates? The
    reason I nested the templates in the first place is because of the "Recipe"
    pages that I sent you. There are about 8 or 9 different sections that I would
    have to change individually if the template weren't linked to the parent
    templates. Any suggestions for future implementation would be greatly
    appreciated!

    I'm trying to dive into style sheets to control and to make changes to my
    websites in the future. But there is somewhat of a learning curve.

    Thanks again for all of your help. I will try this tonight and let you know!

    Rather than nesting templates to accomplish what you describe, I would use
    template logic to write various server-side includes into the page,
    depending on what content you wanted to have there. This works really well
    with subordinate navigation elements - I am not so clear on how it would
    apply to what you are wanting to do, though.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I don't know what you did but whatever it was
    worked. My templates are working correctly. The only issue I have now is in the
    navigation bar. The the font in the CSS size is 10px for all states
    (link,hover,and visited) However after the link is clicked the font gets huge.
    I don't know why its doing this. This might be another topic of discussion. I
    can post a new message but i thought I would go ahead and ask.

    Here is the code:

    #navigate{ width: 168px;

    }

    #navigate ul
    {
    margin-left: 0;
    padding-left: 0;
    list-style-type: none;
    font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
    }

    #navigate a
    {
    display: block;
    padding: 3px;
    width: 168px;
    background-color: #CCFF99;
    border-bottom: 1px dotted #CC0000;
    }

    #navigate a:link, #navlist a:visited
    {
    color: #CC0000;
    text-decoration: none;
    background-color: #CCFF99;
    font-size: 10px!important;
    }

    #navigate a:hover
    {
    background-color: #66CC33;
    color: #FFFFFF;
    text-decoration: none;
    }
    #main {
    padding: 5px;
    }
    #links {
    border-top-style: none;
    border-bottom-style: none;
    background-color: #0099CC;
    }

    Thanks!

    You're welcome.

    > However after the link is clicked the font gets huge
    You have some inconsistencies in the markup -

    <td width="174" rowspan="5" align="left" valign="top"
    bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div id="navigate">
    <ul>
    <li></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-home.html">HOME</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-aboutus.html">ABOUT US</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-recipes.html">RECIPES</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-directory.html">MIO DIRECTORY</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-restaurants.html">MIO RESTAURANTS</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-intnldirectory.html">INTERNATIONAL
    DIRECTORY</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-member.html">BECOME A MEMBER</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-community.html">COMMUNITY RELATIONS</a></li>
    <li><a href="mailto:barbara@oda.state.ok.us">CONTACT US</a></li>
    <li><a href="../mio-baskets.html">MIO GIFT BASKETS</a></li>
    </ul>
    <div id="navigate"></div>

    First, you have an empty list element at the top of the list. Then you have
    two divs with id="navigate" (ID assignments must be unique on the page).
    Finally, your CSS is looking for something called "navlist" for the visited
    pseudo-class - is that a typo?

    #navigate a:link, #navlist a:visited
