Have you tried to include the missing songs with iTunes->File->Add to
    Library?

Yes, and I end up with two copies of the song -- one rated but not
found, the other playable but not rated. :-(

I'm in the process of reconsolidating from inside iTunes. I still don't
have a good method to add just the albums I don't already have to the
library (so I don't get multiple copies of everything I do have).

What about selecting all and deleting from the iTunes window (choosing not
to delete the actual files of course!) and then selecting all your tunes
in the Finder and dragging and dropping to the iTunes window?

Don't you need to set Music Folder Location in the preferences - it's
under the 'Advanced' tab/icon in the Preferences window.

That would work, but I'd lose all the information I entered rating all
the songs -- which is quite valuable to me, as far as listening to what
I like most of the time.
