jillions of sent packets
Antivirus and Firewall programs would be a big help.
As to antivirus program, up to you, but don't skimp...50
bucks now and one year access to up-to-date signatures
that you can download weekly is priceless--but not
foolproof. Norton Antivirus or CA eTrust are two good
products but you must either configure them to download
updates automatically or make it a practice to manually
update every week.
Firewall suggestion would be Zone Alarm. It is available
for free download or for about $20 you can get the
professional version. After install and reboot, you will
start to get pop-ups telling you different things that
are trying to access the network. Study what these
things are and if you can't identify them, don't allow
them until you find out exactly what they are. That will
stop your packets from being sent out and perhaps
identify some malacious code that is on your computer.
Once you clean off all the viruses and control what is
coming into and going out of your computer, I think you
will be able to get a handle on it.

Re: jillions of sent packets
I would also download and install a Trojan Detection program. A good one
with a free 30 day trial is TrojanHunter Guard. You can find it here.

Most Anti-Virus programs will not detect ALL Trojans.
